How to Create a New Custom Dimension

Creating a new custom dimension consists of two steps: preparing the custom dimension and adjusting the rules.

Step 1: Prepare your Custom Dimension

Go to the Dimensions page in Roivenue and click on "Add New Derived Dimension".

There are a lot of fields to fill in. Let's slowly set up all of them.

For the sake of this tutorial, let's create a paid/unpaid rule.

Dimension name : This is the name of dimensions that will be visible all around ROIVENUE (except for Data Exports).

Dimension code: This field is mainly for internal use, but it’s also the display name your custom dimension will show up as in Data Exports.

Show dimension: This checkbox will determine if the dimension will be visible in Performance Analysis or not.

Tracking and Isights Component: This checkbox will determine if the dimension will be visible in Reports and Other Expenses or not.

Sorting metric: Selected metrics will serve as baseline metric to create all the rules. It is basically what metric your custom dimension will include. See best practices for more insights.

Source dimensions: These will serve as the dimensions from which we create the rules out of. You will only be able to build the custom dimension from the rules selected here.

Undefined value: The null case value; the value assigned to an entity that doesn’t meet the requirements, as defined by your rules, to be included.

After you fill in all the fields, you can save the metric and create the first of your rules.

Step 2: Create the Rules

Assigning rules for paid/unpaid traffic is quite intuitive, so let's get to it.

A preview of your traffic is what you’ll first see. The table is reflexive, so whenever you create or change your rules, the changes will be seen on the table.

Click on "Add a New Rule" to filter your traffic.

By assigning basic logic rules, we can easily see based on the name of the platforms: which ones we pay for and which ones we get for free - organically.

The only unpaid channels in our case are direct and organic traffic. You can also add referrals by following similar logic.

After hitting the save button, the changes will need some time to recalculate. Generally, it should not take more than 3-4 hours to see your new dimension in Performance Analysis, but it depends on how much your data needs to be recalculated.

After that, the dimension can be easily filtered in the Performance Analysis
